Keifer, on the road at present, but can help you with some basic info.  The 
batteries in a Type I batt are AA cells.  I have actually grafted in a 
standard 12V NimH "racing pack" from a batt powered R/C car into the standard 
pack.  Worked well!  Otherwise, try the sources mentioned.  I use 
batteriesamerica.com, but get the cells at local "hamfests" (amateur radio 
meets) where they have large quantity of fresh cells.  Just make sure you get 
cells with tabs, don't solder directly to the battery (that will kill your 
expensive new cell!).
