It's such a relief to get to this list and find people invariably helpful
and generous with each other. Keep it up!
I have a 210 Duo, with the original type I (#M7782) NiMH battery, plus
another identical one I got in a grab bag at a university auction. More
recently I picked up, at a seemingly reasonable price, a Type II (#M1499)
battery from eBay, from a guy who said "It was working last time I tried
it," but warned it was "as is." Turns out it's pretty much dead... and
shows strange things when charging through the computer. Before I
upgraded from sys 7.1 to 7.6, the computer would just shut down when it
was in the computer, even tho we were running on AC.
But here's my question: is it "normal" for the empty-to-full gauge on
the desktop (control strip and also upper-right menu bar, plus the
"Battery" desk accessory when engaged) to show "full" when in fact there
isn't enough energy in any of the batteries to boot up, or even to keep
the screen alive for more than a second or two?
If I remove the battery and then reinsert it, the icon shows it filling up
rapidly, the "lightning bolt" showing for a little while, but not really
giving it a charge (or, rather, the battery taking a charge.)
I have also picked up, for a song, a snap-on recharger (#M7778) to go with
my M7783 AC adapter. It regularly shows a green light (or could it be
yellow??) when the type-I's are in it, and never goes beyond red when it
has the type-II in it.
At this point I'm inclined to go bid on a new battery on eBay, and take up
the offer of the Cool Guy in California who gives a $6 rebate and pays
shipping for each duo battery mailed back to him. Any other advice? They
seem to be going for around $50-60 (sometimes $70) on his auctions. I can
live with AC cords, but eventually I'd like to have a working battery...
with the illusion that I'll someday be typing away on an airplane like all
them other impressive show-offs.
Any comments on what seems to be going on, or what I ought to do next?
Thanks,
Peace, -DHF
