It's possible that the PLW 300 requires appletalk functionality, which 
the Keyspan adapter does not provide. (Though this would surprise me 
greatly, the PLW 300 is serial only. The PLW 320 is Appletalk based...)

More likely, for OS 9 and earlier one needs to install the Keyspan 
drivers and go to the chooser. I would e-mail Keyspan support first to 
see if it works, though.

As for printing to the PLW 300 from OS X, I think that you are out of 
luck, IIRC, there is no serial printing support in OS X.
