I also was recently successful in upgrading the OS of my Duo 210 from 7.1
to 7.6, using my IIsi as the server of a local talk network (serial wire)
and, through it, using the scsi connection to my CD drive. All very slow,
but reliable (once I set it up, and went away for a couple of hours or
so.) A certain amount of trial and error, but do-able. All because I
don't currently have a working dock, or mini-dock with scsi. (That will
change, but I didn't want to wait to get the OS upgrade.)
In terms of which computer is server to which, I just had to toggle it
back and forth until I no longer got a message saying that the
installation couldn't go ahead. Just keep going to your chooser, after
all the file-sharing elections are made in the control panels.
Others can explain this step by step better than I. But I just wanted to
add to the chorus of those saying that we can get away with a lot via the
serial cable even when we have nothing else, except another Mac.
Peace, -DHF
