Because you downloaded the wrong iTunes2. One part of the form allows you to
select the version for OS X 10.1 or OS 9.0.4+. The iTunes.pkg is the new
install method that is used in OS X; it won't work in OS 9. You'll have to
download the OS 9 version. Have fun. :-)

Also, I don't know if this will affect you or not, but my Performa 5200
won't run iTunes well. It's a 75MHz 603, with 64MB of RAM and a 2GB HD.
Running OS 9.1 with most extraneous extensions disabled and iTunes2. Will
play MP3s fine in QuickTime, but iTunes2 freezes the moment I hit the play
button. I can recover if I do a force quit, but that doesn't help much.
