Sounds like the driver in question just doesn't support sleep or 
spinning down. I found this to be true with a lot of third-party 
drivers back in the 7.5.x days. Try another one, preferably the Apple 
HD SC or Drive Setup ones if you can swing it - either can be hacked 
to support drives that Apple didn't know about when they were made 
(the driver that Drive Setup install does support booting from 68k 
Macs, though you may have trouble making newer versions of the 
application run on one). My 270c came with the FWB 1.8s driver, which 
I seem to remember worked fine. You can't buy it any more, but it's 
out there in the world.
