It sounds like two distinct problems, physical form and software.

As for form, the MC-T4 is made specifically for all pre-2300 duos,
so it ought to fit the battery slot. Theextremely "snug" fit you
are describing may be a problem. Check the battery slot to make
sure there are no obstructions or broken/deformed pieces of plastic.
Also make sure the battery is not warped or irregular. You might also
check to be sure the battery contacts inside the slot are properly
lined up.

The second issue is getting the battery and the computer to talk
to each other. I believe BTI's so-called type IV battery is a modified
type III. The 280 ought to recognize type III batteries. But you might
want to try the following, which would be more appropriate for 210-270
duos:

Try the "Type III" battery extension, which allows early Duo's power
manager software to recognize and communicate with type 3 batteries.
To use the type III battery extension, make sure you move any other
battery extensions to the trash (for example, "Duo battery patch").
Then, with the system folder closed, drag the "battery type III" extension
to the system folder. When the window pops up asking if you want to
place it in the extensions folders, answer Yes. Then you need to
restart the computer. When it boots up, the computer ought to
recognize the battery.

Good luck.
