I had terrible luck with PowerPrint USB to Parallel (I do not recall
which version) about three years ago when I switched from a peecee
to iMac and wanted to continue using my trusty old Panasonic dot
matrix printer. The iMac crashed repeatedly despite multiple attempts
to remedy extension conflicts and a great deal of good-hearted help
from the PowerPrint technical support folks. The culprit was PowerPrint.
It seems that their USB drivers were incompatible with virtually every
other extension on my iMac. That said, I believe their Parallel-to-Mac
serial
drivers are better than the relatively new USB drivers I had so much trouble
with.

I have had very good luck using HP's own Parallel-to-Mac serial cable
and Parallel to USB cables with Mac drivers downloaded from the HP
website (http://www.hp.com). I use a DeskWriter with my iMac,
a DeskJet 760c with my office G3 B&W desktop machine and a
portable deskwriter 320 and a deskjet 340 with my PowerBook
Duo. All the HP drivers work fine (if somewhat slowly).

A quick check of the HP website shows that they have no Mac
drivers for the OfficeJet 600 or for the DeskJet 550c (which is
the driver PowerPrint uses to run the OfficeJet printer). It looks
like PowerPrint is probably the only source of tried and true drivers
for this and many other Parallel port printers. The producer/marketer
of PowerPrint (Strydent) cautions that while its driver will work, you
must have a PC to set up the OfficeJet for faxing. Once setup is done,
you can trash the PC. But initially, you need a PC to arrange the OfficeJet
for faxing with your Mac.

Good luck! (I can't help you with networking, being a newbie in that domain
myself.) Best wishes,

Robert
