http://www.dealmac.com is one of your best sources for best priced
drives, usually IBMs. 2.5in(9.5-12mm) 20GB drives are showing up
there for around $100-110. The 30GB are a bit more...but just wait a
week and they'll drop. ;-)

Give the difficulty in installing the HD you may want to have a pro
do it. If so, it makes sense to have them put in the biggest drive
you can afford since you don't want to do it more than once.

If you are doing the install yourself there are various guides on
http://www.sineware.com/mac2400. It's not hard if you are careful and
rigorous in your approach to keeping track of the screws. I expect
Sydney, Tom, Mark and a few others on here can do it in 15-30 minutes
by now. ;-)

If you have someone else do it the two most common sources referenced
on this list are MCE(California) and After Hours Consulting(North
Carolina). They and a few others are listed on mac2400 on the
Support page link.

If you assume $100 labor to install your drive(which is at the bottom
of the box...most everything else comes out), you should have them
install a 64MB memory stick if you don't have it. If having MCE do
it, have them enable CardBus(I'm not sure if Paul is doing it or
not.) http://store.powerbook1.com/mcecarupser.html

Here's the value equation using recent low prices:

Stock 2400s are still fetching $400 +/- $50 on
eBay....unfortunately. I really would like to pick up one for my
mom. ;-)

64 MB DRAM...$50
20GB HD...$100
CardBus Enablement/Install Hardware...$100-125? (MCE)
Shipping...$20-40.

Total Upgrades: $300 appx.

The other alternative is something like the MCE Transport
Do-It-Yourself PC Card Kit
http://store.powerbook1.com/mcetranprofi.html
Buy it and drop you new 20GB inside and now(for $200) you've got a
big HD for your 2400(in a box smaller than your floppy drive) and it
will work in your next iBook(or PC)...if Apple ever decides to add
back PC card slots. ;-)

Sorry...kinda got on a roll....and have been real frustrated watching
the ridiculous price people are paying for used iBooks on eBay.

I guess our mac2400 upgrade summary pages really need some updating.
:-( ...I'll try and do it next time I get snowed in.
