Hi,

It seems like this issue may have been mentioned previously on this list,
but I can't find it in the archives nor on the mac2400 web site.

When I touch a key to wake my 2400/G3-320MHz from sleep, it clicks, and then
dies. The hard disk does not spin up; it is as though someone killed all
power. To get it to run I must restart (sometimes I must force restart or
reset), after which it chimes and starts up fine, except reporting that it
had been improperly shut down.

It had been doing this sproradically for the last couple months. It seemed
to be associated with one of my two batteries. However, I now have a new
Powerbook G4, so this week I reinstalled OS 8.1 on the 2400, preparing it
for the next owner. But now the problem occurs every time I try and wake
it, with either battery, or else with no battery, running on AC.

I'm afraid it may be a hardware problem since it does a similar thing when
booted from a CD-ROM or floppy disk. In this case, however, the hard disk
spins up, and stays spinning, but the screen stays dark, and it must always
be force-restarted or reset from this state.

Has anyone experienced this? I have tried resetting the PRAM, rebuilding
the desktop, resetting the power manager overnight (wedged a pencil between
the RESET button and a wall with no battery and no AC power), trashing all
preferences including Finder prefs, playing with Autoremounter and Powerbook
Control Panels, even re-initializing the drive (with Drive Setup 1.7.3),
which was suggested in an Apple TIL. The drive is a 10 GB IBM unit from
MCE.

Still, it clicks and dies when trying to wake!

Thanks for any suggestions,
