David, I am running QuickTime 5.0.3 under system 8.6 on my 2400c and 
other macs just fine. Actually, I think it's faster at decoding and 
playing than the QuickTime 4.1.2 it replaced. See if you have 
activated QuickTime exchange in the QuickTime settings control panel: 
this slows thing down considerably because it forces the Finder to 
search  for files having QuickTime-readable extensions (.mov,.jpg, 
what have you) and change their creator and type. I always turn it 
off with very good results.

Otherwise I suggest you should take a look at your system folder and 
see if you have repeated extensions. Searching the system folder for 
most recently changed items may help.
