I picked up at a decent price an item I don't immediately need but thought
it would come in handy sometime: a "uConnect" adapter and cable which has
USB on one end, and 2 different versions of serial ports on the other (and
software on a CD, to add an extension to one's system file.) It's made by
Momentum US, Inc. (c.1999). Fortunately, the printers I use are either
USB, for the iMac, or scsi for the IIsi, and the old serial-driven
ImageWriter over at Dad's is something I don't use very often. But I
thought I might, just maybe, pick up a Palm or a camera someday that had
serial but no USB, and I wanted to be prepared.
Then I had an idea: since I've used the serial cable with my Duo to
network via AppleTalk/AppleShare to my IIsi, why shouldn't I be able to do
that into the iMac, now that I have a USB adapter?
Well, when I hooked everything up to their proper ports and activated
AppleShare in the chooser on both machines and turned on AppleTalk, the
computers couldn't see each other. Nothing popped up in the Chooser box
for "select a file server." And, I think I set all the right choices in
the "File Sharing" control panel (sys 9.0.4) on the iMac, and the various
separate networking c.p.'s on the Duo, sys. 7.6.
There must be something I'm doing wrong, or forgetting to do right. Is
the whole venture even possible? It would be nice, of course, to share
files other than via the floppy route, between the portable and the
desktop machines, no matter how slowly. (Yes, yes.... I've been advised
to get into ethernet, but that's several appliances away, and not a high
priority at the moment.)
Ideas?
