You're making the electronic equivalent of a syllogism. Two Macs can communicate via AppleTalk over a serial cable because the OS will send AppleTalk packets through the serial port and a serial cable coincidentally has the appropriate pins connected, so PhoneNet or the more exotic LocalTalk adapters and cables are not required for only 2 machines. However, the OS will not send AppleTalk packets over a USB connection, even if there is a serial port at the other end, any more than it will send TCP/IP over USB even if you have a USB-ethernet adapter. I don't think any of the USB-serial adapters ever made supported LocalTalk, although I have a vague recollection that something did. I suspect that was one of the serial adapters that plugged into the modem slot of the early iMacs, B&W G3, or Yikes-- since those appear to the OS as a built-in serial port once the vendor's extension is loaded. If you still have the IIsi, used ethernet cards may be had very cheaply, especially if you have the NuBus adapter-- I paid $12 for one and that was 3 years ago. Then you can run LocalTalk Bridge on the IIsi and link the iMac and Duo: iMac <-ethernet-> IIsi <-LocalTalk-> Duo. If you have a SCSI minidock of some kind, SCSI-ethernet adapters are also sometimes very cheap. Neither of these is quick, but it's as quick as LocalTalk between the IIsi and Duo.
