Hi everyone...

I'm a new member of this list, though I've been enjoying the archives for
quite some time. I have sent this same message to MCE, but I thought I'd
post here as well to see if anyone else has experienced a similar problem.

I recently purchased a used Powerbook 2400/180c in an eBay auction. The
seller indicated that the Powerbook had undergone a cardbus upgrade by MCE
to enable the PC card slots to use cardbus cards. Included in the
auction was a Ratoc firewire cardbus card.

The Powerbook arrived in good condition with Macintosh OS 9 installed on the
hard drive. Before attempting to reconfigure the setup for my needs, I first
tested the various components that came included with the Powerbook (floppy
drive, a 16-bit TDK ethernet LAN PC card, and the Ratoc firewire card). All
of the components, including the Ratoc card, mounted properly on the desktop
and appeared to be functional.

I then proceeded to do a "clean" install of OS 9 so I could then set up the
various applications and preferences to suit my needs. In addition to
performing the clean install of the OS, I also installed the appropriate
drivers for the TDK LAN card and the Ratoc firewire card (which also
installed Apple's firewire enabler and firewire driver extensions).

Upon completing the installation, I booted up the computer (waiting for the
entire booting process to finish) and then inserted the TDK and Ratoc cards.
The 16-bit TDK card mounted and functioned properly; the Ratoc cardbus card,
however, attempted to mount but then the finder quit and the card failed to
appear on the desktop. The system itself didn't crash, and I was able to
eject the Ratoc card using the eject button on the Powerbook.

I have tested several subsets of extentions to determine whether the problem
was an extension conflict. I have also trashed the finder preferences,
zapped the PRAM, reset the power manager and rebuilt the desktop.
Sometimes--about once in every 20 startups--I can actually get the Ratoc
card to mount. However, more often than not, the finder either quits and
fails to mount the card, and sometimes the entire system crashes and I must
use a force quit/restart.

By installing a "clean" OS 9. I have obviously done something to disable the
cardbus, but I can't figure out what it might be. Has anyone experienced
this problem before and, if so, can the situation be reversed so the cardbus
upgrade is functional again?

I look forward to receiving any information that you may be able to provide.

Best regards,

Glenn
