I was already concerned when Apple released the 14" iBook -- the iBook
getting larger rather than smaller. Then the Jan 13-14 Spymac reports that
Apple might discontinue the 12" iBook and standardize on the 14"
(spymac.com). Spymac is not the most reputable of sources, but today I had
the opportunity to pose this scenario to a key industry person. Someone
with absolutely no connection to Apple, but someone centrally positioned in
the LCD flat panel industry. He thought the Spymac reports might have some
legs. Many (but not all) laptop LCD makers are planning to phase out their
smaller "glass" production (12" and below) because their margins are higher
on the larger glass. Of the producers that might stay with the smaller
glass (to supply Sony, for instance), Samsung and other reputed LCD
suppliers to Apple were not among them.

The 12" iBook might be the closest Apple will come to our much loved smaller
books. Even if Apple management were to overcome its shyness about the
"lite" market, the supply chain may foreclose the option.
