I bought a MacSurfer 56k v.90 PCMCIA modem from developerdepot.com for $60. It works fine except for international use. More precisely, my experience is, a) If you are in the States or Britain, the modem works fine both with Apple's PPP and FreePPP. b) If you are in France, Portugal or Spain, the modem works great with FreePPP but bogs down and fails to connect at maximum speed with Apple's PPP as included in system 8.6. I haven't tried system 9 but I've been told it works better. As I always get higher transfer rates with FreePPP, I switched to it on a regular basis long ago and the modem works great everywhere. This behaviour may be ISP dependent though, and not an issue if you plan to use the modem Stateside only.
