Hi Duo list,

My duo 2300's screen stopped working. One day there was a little
flickering when I'd adjust the angle of the screen or squeeze the
right-hand side of the frame around the screen; then later that day
it gave its last flickers and the desktop never came back. The
backlight still seems to be working at least somewhat, but no
desktop is visible; it's all is just a dark, uniform color (using
the brightness buttons it can range from from dark to very dark).

I tried some simple things to rule out possible causes
(disconnected/reconnected the ram; disconnected/reconnected the video
cable where it has a connection just under the keyboard). Then I
wanted to investigate further, so I found instructions for
disassembly in Apple's tech manual for the 2300; to separate the
screen from the base I removed the 3 little plastic covers that are
right at the hinge joint, removed everthing (except the cable) that
held the two togther, pulled the lid and the base apart slightly, didn't
see anything obviously wrong (but didn't know what to look for either),
then tried to put it all back together.

The two side hinges were easy to put back together, but it was very
hard to put back the little plastic cover that's right in the middle of
the hinge. It goes on from the back -- right over the cable, and I
don't see how it could be done without risking crimping or folding or
otherwise damaging the cable (and I wouldn't be surprised if I did
additional damage when I forced that little hinge cover back on, but
anyway the duo's symptoms are just the same as before).

What I would like to ask is: What are the possible causes of a
screen rather abrubtly stopping working like this? And: If a
replacement screen (w/replacement cable attached) is a likely cure,
how does one put it on without risking damage? I just can't see how
it is possible to put that center hinge cover on with the cable right
there. Has anybody done it successfully that could describe the
process in detail? (I did find a brief description on a website, but
it wasn't enough to really understand how to do it.) If it is a job
better left to a professional, and if I find a screen to buy (I see
they are sold on ebay sometimes) what would be a fair price to
pay for the labor?

Susanna
