Duct taping will thicken the battery and make it difficult, if not *impossible* to insert and remove. Personally, I would try epoxy. Frankly, I don't think there would be any harm in using a a battery with a cracked/broken plastic casing in a Duo. As long as the cells inside the battery are intact and don't leak any chemicals, the battery -- cracked case and all -- ought to be fine.
If you must do a repair job, use glue (epoxy or perhaps something a little more flexible). Perhaps dtlinker or Mad Dog (veteran battery rebuilders) have specific suggestions about adhesives.
