The real speedup comes from not having to run the overhead of the PPP data link layer on your client computer, especially on a speed-limited one like a 500 series PB (even PPC upgraded). Proxies are generally a wash or a loss in a decently configured network, unless there's a severe bottleneck somewhere (which there shouldn't be with your DSL connection). The reasons for using things like network proxies and PPPoE are more about business politics and greater ease of tracking users than any technical benefit.
