It's possible for the internal modem to be partly fried (by a digital line, for instance) and become unable to detect a dial tone. The modem may still work in every other respect except for that one. Fortunately you can instruct it to "blind dial" and it'll probably work fine. The method of doing that differs depending on how you're controlling the modem, but with Open Transport you should turn on the "ignore dial tone" checkbox in the Modem control panel. With FreePPP there's a similar setting. If you'd just to test, use a terminal emulator program like ZTerm or Clarisworks and type "ATX3" to turn on blind dialing, then "ATDT555-1212" to try and dial manually. If it works you've found the problem - the modem can't be repaired as far as I'm aware, but it will work fine as long as you blind dial. ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
