Hello, DuoList.

I have a problem that has been plaguing me for quite some time now.

I upgraded a Duo 230 8/80 to a 270c 16/80, color screen and all. The
motherboard is in perfect condition but there's one problem: it refuses
to charge the batteries I bought for it.

I have the original type 1 battery, which I'm sure is toast. I recently
bought three high-capacity Apple batteries for it: 1 type II and 2 type
III.

Here's where it gets strange:

I insert either type III battery and it recognizes it, then dies. Power
off, right there. If I remove the AC & battery, then plug the AC back
in, the hard drive spins up, as if the power manager didn't even know it
turned off.

I insert the type II and it recognizes it, and begins charging. A half
an hour later, it quits trying to charge it, and it remains at empty.

If I do the above 'instant death' trick and insert the type II instead
of the AC power, the hard drive spins up also. So the battery was
accepting charge for however long the Duo was charging it.

Here's my question: What can I do to get this 'book to charge batteries?
The Duo is for my fiancee, for school, but as it stands, she can't use
it at home. The 230 used to exhibit some of the same behavior before I
gutted it to become the 270c.

Is it the system software? I installed 7.5.3 and updated to 7.5.5. It
doesn't recognize the Duo, however ('Macintosh Powerbook' in the About
box), and the type III battery patch does nothing to help the instant
death syndrome, nor the refusal to charge syndrome.

If anyone on the list has had this happen, or has any suggestions, I'd
appreciate it.

Cheers.
