I've been brewing my response all weekend Sidney. (as my wife would
confirm, I frequently think a long time before I open my mouth.)

I have a hard time calling myself a 'fanatic'... I love my 2400c, but
I am not fanatically devoted to it. It has a few shortcomings (RAM
limit, vRAM limit, and lack of replacement batteries being the big
ones) that I can't overlook. I can live with them, for now. What I
love about my 2400c, and makes me use it everyday with joy are: the
size and weight (or lack thereof), the amazing luck I have had with
battery life, startup speed, and long-term stability with this
particular machine (despite being a frankentosh of now three 2400c's)
... and of course the completely personalized custom green
digital.forest paint job and clear green keyboard! =)

I'm a bit torn though, as much as I love my 2400c, I'm pretty
ambivalent at the moment about pouring too much money into it.
Granted, I was one of the lucky ones that bought a copper G3 from
Vimage when the dollar/yen rate was at its most favorable... before
Vimage closed and the price went up over 40%... so my machine has no
pressing *need* at the moment. However if I were still using the
stock 180MHz CPU, I'd be in a frenzy to get my hands on a new upgrade.

To answer your main question...

I'd buy a 500-600 MHz upgrade if:
* The price was between $300 and $500.
* It was offered as a self-install
* I knew it would last at least a year (backed by a warrantee)

That said, if a couple of grand fell in my wallet right now, I'd
probably buy myself an iBook. I realize that is probably a sacrilege
to the 'fanatics' here on the list, but I'm really ready to make the
jump to OS X full time, and no matter how tricked a 2400c gets, it
can't do that.
