I would start from scratch (clean install), unless your hard drive is
partitioned. At this point it mat be a good time to partition it with Drive
Setup, if it isn't already, so that you could in fact have more than one OS
installed. I like to do that so that I can test out an upgrade and see how
it works with all of my stuff before I commit to an upgrade. (Actually one
of many reasons.) I like to use 2 - 250mb to 500mb startup partitions with
my 18gb drive. I have 9.1 and 8.6 installed right now, and 9.1 seems really
solid, as long as you don't need to run too many memory intensive apps at
the same time. I will use a fair bit of virtual memory if necessary.

You can also boot from floppy or CD and trash the 9.0.4 system to do the
install without having to initialize the drive.

So in any case make sure you have your data backed up!
