Hey folks, got another, unrelated, engine swap question. I went to my favorite junkyard last week, and discovered their latest addition was a beautiful '92 Firebird with a pristine 3.1L FI engine. I've already pulled a good bit of the interior stuff, but now I'm wondering how hard it would be to replace the grungy 2.8L carbed engine in my '83 Firebird with it. I would hope to do it myself because I figure it would be a good first engine swap, and I am hoping that a V6-V6 swap would be easier than a V6-V8 swap.
So, that's the question of sorts. How much effort for a newbie to the work would it be to swap in a 3.1L FI engine from a '92 replacing an '83 2.8L carb? Also, I'd just as soon keep the T-5 that's in there now, so would an '83 T-5 bolt up to a '92 engine? I know it won't add a lot of power, I'm mainly looking to do it as a learning experience, and to have a nicer engine in the Firebird. Maybe I'll learn enough to mess with my Trans Am's engine later this summer. Naturally I'd be able to get any needed wiring and the ECM out of the same car, so that shouldn't be an issue. Anyone have any links to pages describing the process? I'd have to go with the dealer service manuals that I have, plus the ubiquitous Haynes book. I also suspect the yard would want or have to do the pulling of the 3.1, so I'd miss out on seeing that part. Thanks for putting up with basic questions, I know most of you are far beyond this stuff and V6s in general, but you all are probably the best folks I know to ask ;) Scott Holder ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
