My Duo 210 has behaved quite nicely, with its 7.6 system, 24 megs of RAM,
and its original 80 meg HD. I'm getting ready to swap in a 240 meg HD,
but was awaiting arrival of a SCSI "Newer" MicroDock. However, a few days
ago, when using the "APS SCSI DOC" adapter, with its two settings to let
it either access other SCSI devices (like the CD drive that I want to use
to install 7.6 onto the new HD when I install it), or be another HD for my
IIsi, I noticed some strangeness starting to appear on the desktop of the
Duo.
I noticed first an extra, then up to SEVEN extra, icons of the Duo's HD.
(In SCSI remote mode, whatever we call it, when looking in from the IIsi,
there was only one icon.) I had used "Powerbook Setup" control panel to
set the ID number to 1, although earlier I had picked, I think, 5 -- which
was then unused. But whichever ID I pick, and then reboot, I've still
been getting multiple SCSI images... each of which takes me to programs
that are on the HD. (Sort of like those pictures from space, where a
distant galaxy acts as a gravitational "lens," and we see multiple images
of the galaxies behind it!)
I can drag the extra images to the trash, and confirm after it asks if I
really want to, and true to the promise, it remounts them when I reboot,
though I've emptied the trash.,
I did a complete re-install from the CD of system 7.6, and the Duo behaves
just fine... but still with multiple images of the HD. When I do "get
info" on each one of them, they each have a different SCSI ID. When I run
either SCSI Probe or Silverlining, I get reports of that HD at each of the
SCSI numbers, except the one taken by the CPU.
I'm wondering now (1) will I have this problem when I put the new HD in?
And (2) is there something gone awry in a SCSI controller chip,
necessitating me sending this out for a replacement? I obviously want to
control costs, and might just look for a new motherboard to swap in.
By the way, I did a complete save of the contents of the HD, for
insurance. Should I be reformating this 80-megger?
Anyone seen this kind of weirdness before?
This is the gang to ask, of course!
Thanks in advance, -DHF
