As someone who's done that, yes, you can.

Your battery life will suffer on the 1400, however. The Duo adapters are 
just too weak to really charge the 1400s battery. They'll charge, but 
the moment you get another adapter (any up to the ibook 'yo-yo' will 
work) with more power, you'll laugh. I did. My adapter was an original 
Duo 230's  that I replaced with a Hi-Capacity 3-amp brick. My 1400's 
battery charges in <30 minutes and gives me around 2.5 hours of power.
