Carlos Pinto answered Frank Modica regarding booting from an external SCSI device, and said that "a lot of external CD drives will not boot up properly".
There are a few things to say here. First, let me say that what follows doesn't cover ATAPI drives (OS 8.0 onwards and CD/DVD extension) but just SCSI CD drives, those that matter when used with the Microdock, Minidock or Dock. I have got two bootable CDs, one with 7.1 and one with 7.6. That way, I can boot all 68k machines and some of the PowerPC ones (I use the 7.6 with my Duo 230 and 280c). Now, there are two ways to make sure that whatever CD drive you are using as your external SCSI unit, it will boot: - One is to use an external utility like CD Sunrise 2.2c or Intech SpeedTools. Sunrise doesn't always work; SpeedTools is great and works from 7.0 up but is not free. - The other one (my choice) is to use Apple CD-ROM 5.3.1. This extension originally shipped with OS 7.6. It is an important piece of kit because it is the only one that supports generic SCSI drives that are 6X and faster. This means that with this in your minimal system CD or floppy, you can mount CDs with non-Apple CD drives without the need for third-party software. I started using my Duo 230 again after it spent more or less four years in the cupboard, and the above trick enables me to plug an old external Yamaha 4x4x16 and install/reinstall quicker than using the floppy or troubleshoot with Norton 3.5 on the CD as well. Also, Disk Copy was used to create images out of old programs that came on floppies and make use of the space available on the CD. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work as programs like Word 5.1 or RAM Doubler 2 will not install if not on a floppy. Nevertheless, very useful.
