Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions. I received offers off list as well as on. Several of you offered to take a look at it, and see what was missing and repair it if possible. I live in Idaho and decided to take the offer of a list member in Seattle.
It came out of a government subcontractor at the Hanford Facility in Washington State. As a matter of policy they pull all of the HD's out of any compter they sell. Earelier I had one that had been pried apart with a lot of ruined parts. Since I did not expect to find another I sold it to a list member. This one has very little poliching of keys (the only way I know how to judge it's use), probably sat on a shelf most of the time. And thanks all of you wonderful people who offered, in case the problem was bigger than I wanted to deal with, to take it off my hands. Shucks one member even offered real money!
