That would be me... chuck 'i'm not a verb!' goolsbee. =) >I made the trip to Fry's for some heat sink goop ($5.95, IIRC), and >appropriately fortified w/ my favorite single malt, opened up the box >again. There was a very little bit of heat-transfer goo on the CPU, and >the pellet on the bottom of the chassis, which contacts the CPU, was >clean as a whistle. (The pellet/heatsink is affixed to a rod that is >eventually welded to the alum. sheet on the bottom of the case.) There *should* have been a pad between those two items as well. A thermal pad that fills that gap. It shipped standard with the Interware 320 G3 upgrade. It looks like it may have been lost or never even installed. No wonder it was getting hot. Without it there is a 1.5mm air gap between the heat sink and the CPU. You might consider buying some thermal gap filler to go along with your 'heat sink goop' and another bottle of Malt. =) Good Luck, --chuck goolsbee geek wrangler, digital.forest inc, bothell, wa <http://www.forest.net> list mom, mac-mgrs mailing list... <http://www.mac-mgrs.org> ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
