The 280c won't drive a 17" via the dock?  Think the newer docks could accept 
VRAM (someone w/a Dock II plse check....I haven't one) and go to a 21" @ 256 
colors.  As for the cache, beyond my surgical abilities, and don't think the 
chipset supports it.
