That's the last thing to rule out, from my own experience anyway.

SCSI carelessness with any machine brings such serious results to people 
quite a lot, really. That's one reason why the public is so happy with 
USB and FireWire instead. No worries about termination, scsi addressing, 
and the like. 

I wonder what you did, especially the second time, step by step...if your 
peripheral's power was on when you plugged its scsi cable into the 
mac...or did you plug the cable into the Mac first and then the 
peripheral...or...

Sheesh. When you get the next 2400, make sure the store has fully checked 
out the new one's scsi circuit first, not to mention that fuse. In the 
meantime, have both your peripherals as well as the cables and connectors 
checked out, and learn about scsi termination if you don't know now.

As rare as they are here in the States, it's amazing to read about stores 
anywhere with 2400's in stock. Wheeee!
