I've aware of only one vendor who made a 'native' scsi 2.5" HD larger than 540mb (that's the IBM). I've seen (but never owned) 810MB, 1GB and 2GB scsi drives made by Toshiba, made and sold mostly for SparcBooks I think. The 810 is the most common, at least based on my observations of what comes up on eBay, and I've only ever seen the 1GB and 2 GB versions a couple of times, and have since regretted my lame low bid, the prices they eventually fetched I'd pay now in a heartbeat!
The 1GB IBM drive y'all are thinking of was an IBM 1GB ATA drive with an ADTX (brand) adapter plate, _very_ slow compared to a native scsi drive, and slow compared with even the most basic IDE interface-connected ATA drive. This combo was sold by Apple as an upgrade for the PB500 series, as well as by other vendors, I've got 2, one an Apple branded version, the second not-Apple-branded. For 'fun', I tested one of these in my 2300c, since it has both scsi and IDE busses i figured it would be a good test. Now of course I can't seem to lay my hands on the actual results but if my memory serves the IBM ATA mechanism on the IDE bus gave reads and writes in the area of 2.5MB/s, vs. perhaps 500K/s through the scsi-to-IDE adapter. The real shame is that only PB3400 and later PBs use DMA, so 2300/5300/1400 series are very IDE-bus-speed-limited. The IBM 20GB unit in my 1400 still only tops out at around 3.8MB/s R/W, but the drive itself is capable of at least double that. I also recently tried an 10GB IBM drive which does R/Ws of around 3.5MB/s on my PB1400 with the ADTX adapter in a PB540c/PPC (using OS9.1) I got a similarly lousy ~500K/s result. Still it worked, and while slow could be used to give any older scsi based PB larger storage. BTW, the adapter could see the 9.5GBs or so drive as formatted on my PB1400, but when I re-formatted it on the PB540c it could only see 8GBs available for use, a limit in the adapter's firmware from what I've read. The other adapter maker I could find is Century, see links below. This adapter has a 32GB limit but is claimed to be _much_ faster than ADTX's item. This may be the same unit sold by caldrives.com (US$150!!), as well as MCE PowerBook Products (US$399!! with a 10GB drive). US$85 apiece, direct from Century, seems pretty reasonable to me, but I don't know if they will ship to the US. We'll see, as I placed an order for two!! LOL, all the searching I did answering this question got up my appetite for huge HDs in my old PBs. Hmm, what can I do with 30GBs in my PB180 . . .
