> I have a slightly quirky 2300c that sometimes wont power up.
Hello, Carter, Herb, Marcelus, new folks. Jump right in!
There's some quirks with the 2300 alright.
I've owned mine new since '96, and though it's still working,
it's been relegated to a corner of my workshop, light duty only.
The 1st thing that went was the hinge, which caused the screen housing
to separate at the bottom left side, so I learned to squeeze it together there
every time I opened it, and moved on..
The next thing that went was the powerplug socket. I had to jam a small box
(of screws) under the plug-in to maintain power. Another PITA, but workable.
Then I caught some kind of weird bug that made the duo try to go on-line,
all by itself, at the oddest times. (like, in front of strangers)
Then, one day, I tapped into a digital phone line to receive a fax on site, and
I'm pretty sure that's what fried the internal modem. No more faxing, but I had an
external serial modem to get on-line with, and I could live with that.
Then, of course, I dropped him on his little head last year, and that killed the
battery,
and hence its portability. He's parked and plugged in all the time now, sleeping 'til
I need him.
The bump also killed the speaker, so now if the power goes out and I have to
reboot, I can't hear any start-up chime, and I've learned to wait for ~10 seconds to
see
if the screen lights up, before I start resetting. You usually don't have to pump the
power button 2 or 3 times like Carter said he did.
Reading this, and the List, you might get the idea there's nothing but problems
with these machines, but most of the time we're talking punctuated equilibrium here.
Personally, my Duo gave me 5 seamless years of solid work, once I learned to
twirk its quirks, and I never regretted buying it.
But, like all of us, the hardware ain't getting any younger. I find what I loved
the most
about my Duo was the Mac work environment, which I'd never seen before, and which I
will
now not do without.
p.s. I had a Powerbook Display control panel (v.7.5.2) in the Duo's OS 7.5.5 where I
could turn
Video Mirroring on or off. Will this work on a Wallstreet, OS9?
