Hey list,

I've just spent the most incredible afternoon with a 500Mz iBook, a
sparkling brand new 800MHz TiBook, and my desktop beige G3 upgraded
with an XLR8 G4@500MHz, what with Diskwarrior sessions and MacOS X
testing and playing. My G3-upgraded 2400c is also serving me well as
I write this. Here go my impressions:

a) The iBook is annoyingly slow at downloading system upgrades and
painfully slow in the last optimizing phase. For web browsing,
internet stuff and text it also felt slow, but things improved a lot
after Diskwarrior performed its magic.

b) The usual about the new TiBook: gorgeous screen, very quiet,
doesn't get very warm, incredibly great machine. I use the 2400c
connected to an AppleVision monitor and I like the quality of the
image a bit better, but having a flat screen sure beats it.

c) Big surprise: the drive in the TiBook had already been
diskwarriorised! The drive graph showed the files were already in
order. After seeing what a mess the Apple OS X installer makes of the
HFS+ directory, kudos to Apple for shipping optimised drives. I think
the beige G3 gained 25/30% more speed after using Diskwarrior, so
it's quite an improvement.

d) For common tasks the diskwarriorised beige desktop felt virtually
as fast as the TiBook. On the contrary, screen video was incredibly
faster on the TiBook and probably iMovie or FCP would have tipped the
scales more in favour of the TiBook.

e) The TiBook still feels fragile, at least for a butterfingers like
me. The iBook IS bigger than the 2400c. I still feel the sturdiness
of the 2400c hasn't been surpassed.

f) My portable needs on the road are well addressed by the 2400c for
the time being and way longer than that... but it's a pity the TiBook
will be going next week (but only next door, he he). More than ever,
I firmly believe that I'll eventually get one and pass on the iBook.
If replacing a desktop full time and/or using MacOS X full time is
your game, no doubt the TiBook is a much, much better machine.
