Jim Castleberry, I don't know if this will help you, but I made an interesting discovery about my modem just the other day. Before I get to that, I'll provide a bit of background. I have been using a Motorola Montana 33.6 card modem since I've had my 2400c (bought new in 1/98). I have always been very disappointed in how slowly my computer performed on the internet. I often had trouble connecting. Email messages took at least three seconds to load. Web pages took well over 30 seconds to load. Sometimes they just stalled out.
Early on, I investigated the problem. One avenue was asking this list what the deal was. The consensus was that something was wrong with my modem. Everyone seemed to suggest seeking help from Motorola. I did that and other things. No help. I resorted to using the family desktop (PC) for internet, and the 2400c for other work. I was fooling around with the control panel menu (Mac 8.6 by the way) the other day and came across the modem portion. I don't know what prompted me to do so, but I configured the modem to have another modem's driver or script, whatever you call it. The script I used was a Hayes something or other. Then for kicks I started up my browser. Man, what a pleasant surprise, and at the same time, a letdown over not having done that four years ago. The 2400c now runs at the speed of light on the internet, comparatively speaking of course. I think the problem was that the modem's compression capability was not a part of the "stock" driver included in the modem's software. I'm not a computer genius. I just follow the directions in the books and usually have success in getting things going. In the modem's case, I followed the instructions and got slow success. I didn't know the modem required compression. I don't even know what compression is technically. Anyway, you might click on one of those other modems listed in Apple's menu of drivers under the modem settings section. Alternatively, if you're up on scripting, "@" away.
