Hmm, I didn't explain that fully. I wanted to be able to compare IDE transfer rates with SCSI and the only PB that can use both scsi and IDE drives internally is the 2300. I was actually thinking of perhaps putting one into my 280 so I also wanted to test physical fit into a Duo.
Cool thing about the 2300 is that with a few cable contortions and with the keyboard loose one can use both scsi and IDE at once, letting me copy my system and other junk from the old 2GB IDE drive onto the new 10GB drive. However, it took 10 or so restarts to get everything copied (in the Finder) as the PB would lock up after 10MB or so. To me they seemed just like the lockups one gets with HDs > 4GB in scsi-disk mode connected to another Mac, leading me to wonder just what is the exact problem that causes that issue. I'm thinking it has nothing to do with scsi-disk mode per-se, rather a problem with the scsi- and/or ide- controllers, or the bus that connects them or . . . Hmm, somehow I'm sure I'm not discovering anything new, but having a 10GB scsi HD _and_ an IDE HD internally in a 2300 likely isn't very common. As for the transfer rate comparison, I did some initial testing and it looks like the scsi+ide combo drive on a 2300 internal scsi bus runs somewhere around 1.3MB/s. I don't know how accurate that really is though as I didn't have my favorite HD performance tester loaded, ATTO's ExpressTools Pro, which I'm not sure will run on a non-scsi manager 4.3 PB anyway. That compares pretty favorably with the old ADTX adapter that came with the Apple 1GB HD which topped out around 550KB/s. I still haven't tested pure-IDE rates yet (ran out of time) but I'll be sure to post that info when I finally get to it. On other older ide-equipped PBs, I've tested TravelStars at ~2.0MB/s to 3.5MB/s depending on which drive and which PB. afaik, TravelStars are all ATA 2.5" mechanisms, The PB500 series can accept up to 17mm thick drives, so you could use most any ATA drive 12.5mm or thinner with one of these ide-scsi adapters. That describes most any modern ATA laptop drive though. As for playing MP3s on a PB500, you _must_ have a PPC processor as I know of no player for 68K Macs tho I'd love to hear otherwise. For an external scsi drive, there are tons of multi-GB scsi drives available on eBay. Any 68 or 80 pin drive can be adapted but if possible get a 50 pin drive for simplicity's sake. To me the best value looks like the Seagate 23GB Elite (68-pin), occasionally selling for less than $25 but usually around $35 or $40, but they require a _full-height_ scsi box (~3" x 5.5" x depth). Besides being _fast_ for an older drive, the Elite series was designed for 24/7/365 server duty, a distinct advantage over mechanisms intended for desktop use. http://search-desc.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&que ry=seagate+elite&ht=1&itemtimedisp=1&st=2&SortProperty=MetaNewSort&SortOrde r=d&srchdesc=y&BasicSearch=++ Other large-HD options (for PCI based Macs only) include a PCI-IDE adapter for ATA drives internally, or PCI-FireWire adapter and an external FW-IDE case. In any case, unless you need a very small drive case for portablility, it makes _no_ sense to use a laptop-drive based external HD, what with the price premium and short(er) drive life of laptop drive mechanisms. Here's what I wrote several weeks ago regarding Century, with some links: ---------------------------------------------- The other adapter maker I could find is Century, see links below. This adapter has a 32GB limit but is claimed to be _much_ faster than ADTX's item. This may be the same unit sold by caldrives.com (US$150!!), as well as MCE PowerBook Products (US$399!! with a 10GB drive). US$85 apiece, direct from Century, seems pretty reasonable to me, but I don't know if they will ship to the US. We'll see, as I placed an order for two!! LOL, all the searching I did answering this question got up my appetite for huge HDs in my old PBs. Hmm, what can I do with 30GBs in my PB180 . . . some links: http://www.adtx.co.jp/english/conv-SCSI-IDE.html http://www.iodata.com/products/idsc/idsc.html http://www.devicenet-usa.com/main.html http://www.caldrives.com/scsi/scsiconverter.html http://www.century.co.jp/e_products/chb25int.html http://store.yahoo.com/powerbook1/mcemob10scsi.html http://online.century.co.jp/BittradeTest/e_shop/chb25int.html (11,000 yen = ~US$85) ---------------------------------------------- The last link is a page where you can actually order the adapter, there are _no_ direct English links to that item, I had to 'hack' a url to get that page to come up. I don't think they are supposed to sell to the States, as there are a couple of distributors here and they probably have some sort of agreement to not market these adapters here (only my speculation.) The total for my 2 adapters was 23,200Y (11,000Y x 2 + 1,200Y Express shipping), say ~US$180. It took about 4 or 5 days to get here from Japan, via International Express Mail. Obviously they will ship to the States, answering my original question above. Now if those 30GB TravelStars I've got on order would just get here, I could finally put one in my PB180! <G> Hope this helps (and sorry about the length of the post, I do get carried away!), : >) Dan K PS: hmm, I'm not sure if I should be asking this, but as I've got a whole bunch of ATA laptops drives coming in, is there any interest in buying a preassembled 4GB or larger scsi PB drive? If yes I can order a few more adapters and put some together. I am going to flog most of the drives on eBay but my thinking is that scsi PB users craving more HD space might also be interested.
