Nick,

You surely know that 800x600 is the default resolution of the LCD. If
this is the first time you have connected an external monitor to the
2400c, the computer tries to switch to the maximum resolution
possible, which is 1024x768 and 8-bit colour with the 1710AV, and
therefore the LCD goes blank as it does not support the same
resolution. The only way to see both screens lit is at 800x600, and
the way to accomplish it should be the following:

a) Thrash the display preferences file just in case, because once you
set the resolution for an external monitor (which you surely have
done at 1024x768), any other external monitor subsequently connected
will attempt to use that resolution.
b) Unhook the monitor and adb cables, start the 2400c with the
display open and put it in sleep mode, and connect the monitor to the
mains.
c) Attach the monitor (just the VGA port **and never the adb cable**,
this is important, you could fry the motherboard) to the PowerBook
and **turn on the monitor**.
d) Press any key to wake up the PowerBook. If all goes well, the
external monitor should activate at this point. The LCD shouldn't
come off, but if it did, you should switch resolution to 800x600.
e) If you still don't see anything in the external monitor, I think
the adapter is to blame. I remember that we bought our smurf G3
tower, the video card had one bent pin that created all sorts of
trouble until we had it replaced. The fun thing was the monitor soon
developed a yellow tint and I really couldn't help saying to the guy
that he had got a lemon. The expression doesn't traslate very well
over here and he took it badly. Weird.

f) There should be no missing pins in the VGA adapter and as for
being 2400c-compliant, I can't see why, there are no switches or
anything involved.

My Colorsync monitor works just great with the 2400c and so does the
1710AV for all I know. If you want to work with an external monitor
on a regular basis, you must have a look at pages 55-59 and 96-97 of
the 2400c manual (you can always download it if you don't have it
yet). There you'll find more than enough troubleshooting material and
very interesting reading.

Good luck,
