This will work. Get the highest cap cells possible (NiMH tabbed cells) and solder them in place of the 4/5ths A cells. You may need some foam tape to keep the cells from rattling around in the case. Do NOT use standard "appliance" cells...soldering directly to a battery is not recommended! Make sure you get tabbed cells...much easier to assemble, too. May take some futzing to get the cells in place...the 4/5ths cells are shorter, so use a Type I layout. The smaller diameter will help. IIRC, RatShak has such cells....convenient, albeit more expensive. One other possibility are the salvage guys....just bought some replacement packs (brand new....2000 date codes) for the old/big Motorola flip phones....paid $2 each.
