A very good point from Ralph... patience is the key.  Hold out, keep
bidding, and you should be able to get a deal (see below).

Wow... the gold standard, eh?  But, in light of this discussion, it's worth
pointing out that patience and persistance (and an off-hour end time for the
auction) won me that auction.  Amazingly, my proxy bid held (which seems to
never happen there).  But the ratio of my auctions lost:auctions won must be
like 50:1 or so, at least for comets.
