Really your issue is in the cable. Make the right cable and your system will work. Keep using the wrong cable and you can do whatever you want to the software, drag the monitor around the planet in a bucket, and it will still not work until you get the right cable. : )
The adaptors with no switches only pass the signal through. They don't tell the computer what monitor is hooked up. The older macs were told which monitor is hooked up via shorting out pins. You are not telling the computer which monitor is hooked up so the poor little mac is confused and wont work. Do you have a multi meter and know how to solder?
