Hello, Most any PCMCIA modem will work IF it is a "hardware" modem, that is all the modem hardware in inside the card and the computer simply interacts with it as a serial device. Most newer PC Card modems are "software" modems, meaning they rely on the CPU to do a lot of the work for them, which makes them cheaper. There are no Mac drivers for any of these. Usually 33.6/28.8 modems are hardware modems simply because they are older and software modems are a relatively recent development.
If it is a true hardware modem, no special drivers are required; the Mac will just see it as a new serial port. However, you may still need to have a modem configuration script for the Remote Access control panel; you can see what's already there, of course, to help guide your buying. Most modems are covered by the scripts included with the system. Often, choosing a different script will work fine. Specific models I've had success with are the 3Com/Megahertz 3CXM056B (57.6 Kbps), US Robotics/Megahertz XJEM3336 (33.6 Kbps) and the Megahertz CruiseCard XJA3288 (28.8 Kbps). You can find all of these and others like them on eBay for cheap. If you have a modem already and you're not sure whether it's a hardware or software modem, just put it in. If it shows up as a new port in the Modem control panel, you're probably fine. Ivan. ---------------- >Hello, all.
