Among other consulting, I do real enterprise-level network security 
for a living. Ivan gave a *very* good and accurate summary, and I 
would refer anyone who's interested in the subject back to it. If you 
have specific, useful criticisms, please offer them. Otherwise...

Most of the so-called consumer firewall hardware on the market is no 
better than a simple NAT box. Pretty much all of the "firewall" 
software is entirely useless, and some of it actually harmful. There 
is more FUD in this area than anywhere else, and I'm sorry to say 
Brandy is merely adding to it here.


Here are the top three things you can do to improve network and 
system security:

Don't run Microsoft Outlook.
Don't run Microsoft Office.
Don't run Microsoft Windows.

You may observe a pattern.
