Unless you have a computational need for intensive floating point,
the 280 should work with a kernel that includes the GNU software
floating point support, meaning you don't need a real FPU. This used
to be the default for most generic kernel builds, though it may not
be nowadays. It's long been possible to run Linux this way because of
all the FPU-less 386 and 486SX machines out there. The status page at
http://www.mac.linux-m68k.org/ lists several 68LC040 Macs that are
supported.
