You sure about that? My 280c has the option, and if I let it sit for a
few seconds the cursor blink slows down and anything running in the
background slows down (solar system simulator for one). If I turn the
option off, then it doesn't do that. Also, the battery remaining time
goes way up.

The 270c would use less power, particularly with processor cycling
(which doesn't work on the 68040). The FPU is a bit of a waste, unless
you use it with some software that can do fancy math-bound screensaver
transitions. ;) I wonder if a 250 can drive a 270c screen somehow?

For this application a 2300c might use less power than a 280c as well
(again because of processor cycling).
