Speaking of which, I've yet to do that to my own 2400c because (gasp) 
it is comfortably retired now.

That is one hint. It begs the question of "is this DeskJet equipped 
with an AppleTalk or serial interface?"

Seriously though, it is either:
A driver/network issue, for which I will need an answer to my question above.

or

A software conflict. Somebody on my list today posted a fix to a 
'proliferating desktop printer' issue that involved a conflict 
between Suitcase & ATM:
