Not so insane...I did it, and so has a few other people here...

I know of no way to connect with 16-bit cards, at all. Some stock 2400's 
appear to deal with 32-bit (Cardbus) cards better than others, and of 
course you can always Cardbus-enable your 2400. (On my own 2400, 32-bit 
cards would crash and freeze the machine under OS 9; I don't know what 
would have happened in X).

32-bit cards that have been known to work are the CompUSA house brand 
Cardbus 10/100 card with Realtek drivers at http://www.realtek.com.tw 
(which is what I use), and theoretically any card based on a DEC chipset 
will work without additional drivers such as the Farallon PN995.
