I *think* at some point someone on the list opened up one of those DAAs and reported it to be simply a wire adapter (as you say, pin-switching gear). This is what you'd expect; it doesn't need to have any smarts or do anything at all in particular other than satisfy byzantine telephone company certification regulations. If there is anything there it wouldn't be much. Anyway, one could try hacking together the DIN-8 end of a Mac modem cable and a regular RJ-11 phone cable to make one's own and see what happens.
