I haven't tried enableing the cache under 8.6, but 9.1 and X both crash when I try.
Maybe I'll try 8.6 just incase... Ok, I just tried 8.6 and it does the same thing. so I guess it`s a hardware problem.

The computer runs ok (occasional random crashes) when the cache is
disabled. Of course speed takes a big hit without the cache.
