I am not sure about the switch part.... but
I built a 6500 router thats great!! (fast and quiet)

It runs yellowdog linux. There is ALOT of documentation on setting
up linux routers. The 6500 natrally fits into a 2u rackmount case
and looks great in my rack!! I have been pleased with it. I think I
spent $5 on it; to replace the ide drive with a 1gig scsi hard drive.

The second network card is a standard pc nic (I had one sitting
around), you can use almost any pc nic. The versatility of the
firewall/router is what really makes it nice.

I purchased a linksys wireless access point because they had good
raiting at the time, only later to find out there is --ZERO-- support
except for windows usb configuration. With my 6500 router I don't
have to worry about any of that... (I could even set the router up
as a base station if I hadn't already bought one). The infinate
flexability is a blessing....

I hope you find what you are looking for. I found the 6500 at a
local university who was getting rid of a bunch of systems (I
actually got three, and enough scsi cables to tie my professors car
shut for his retirement ;-) hehe

good luck
Nathan Elliott
