Hi Dan,

I've borrowed a HDI-30 and spent 4.5 hours over the past two days trying to get the Dock to startup with anything external; HD, CD-ROM. Got close once using a patched version of HD SC Setup 7.3.5 but now nothing. (Bad Quantum Lightning Prodrive 350mb from Otherworld)

Ralph Mawyer's query about an Adaptec SCSI PC card reminded me that I have a similar one. I bought a SCSI CD-R with PC card and cable. It's an Adaptec AVA-2902A and the cable is 24" long with 3 IDC-50F. So the hack idea is out.

I installed the internal cable with a 80mb drive. I have two Duo 230s, one that networks with ethernet, the other is missing some networking software. After some fiddling and cursing the internal finally showed up with the good Duo and I've moved some OS 7.6 installers onto the internal and upgraded the so-so Duo's System software.

New to PowerBooks,
David

Forgive me for such a late reply. I use Macs at work and sometimes when I get home I don't want to touch a computer. I get the Digest version.

While I greatly appreciate the hacker's impulse, wouldn't it just make more sense to buy a 30-pin to 25 or 50 pin external cable? I see these on eBay regularly for under $10 shipped, seems to me hard to justify the bother when an entirely satisfactory solution exists for so little cash.

However, you _can_ buy internal scsi cables with an external port that fits into, and includes a rear port cover. Of course those covers are PC style, but I reckon a dedicated hacker could easily hack their own nubus port cover with the appropriately shaped hole.

Another source for an external DB-25 port includes old external SCSI cases. They usually have a lil' PCB interface between the IDC-50 internal cabling and the DB-25 external port.

just my $.000002,

Dan K
